There are a few things that I love, in no particular order: lume, Kurt Klaus, pilot’s watches, perpetual calendars… Did I mention lume? I did? Well, I’m mentioning it again. Sue me. (Ed. note: please do not sue him.)
To this end, it should come as no surprise that the one watch from this year’s Watches & Wonders that haunts my dreams and waking moments alike is none other than the utterly ridiculous IWC Big Pilot Perpetual Calendar Ceralume.
“Utterly ridiculous”? Yes, though perhaps only a little more so than the average timepiece, given that watches on their own are somewhat ridiculous in this age of smartphones, computers, GPS-linked automobile clocks, et al. That we as a society are practically surrounded by time is a topic of discussion for another day, but I bring this up in defense of the “utterly” in this anachronistic industry of ours. Seriously, if you’re gonna go through the effort of wearing a watch in the first place, you might as well go all the way. Go big or go home, as the saying goes.
